Imam Maturidi: Architect of Islamic Creed

Imam Maturidi Book Cover

Imam Maturidi: Architect of Islamic Creed by Dr Yusof Mutahar provides a clear and insightful introduction to the life, thought, and intellectual legacy of Imām Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī, one of the central architects of Sunni theology. The work emphasises al-Māturīdī’s balanced integration of revelation and reason, showing how this harmony shaped centuries of scholarly tradition.

The book highlights that the Māturīdī creed is fundamentally rooted in the Qur’an itself. Dr Mutahar illustrates how al-Māturīdī’s theological principles emerge from Qur’anic verses that call believers to reflection, moral clarity, and recognition of divine wisdom—presenting creed as both intellectually rigorous and spiritually grounded.

This publication was written alongside Dr Mutahar’s monumental scholarly project: a complete English translation and commentary of Tafsīr al-Māturīdī (Ta’wīlāt Ahl al-Sunnah). Expected to exceed 15,000 pages, this is one of the first full-scale efforts to make the classical Hanafi-Māturīdī exegetical tradition available to English-speaking audiences.

The author also holds an authentic scholarly licence (ijāzah) in the Ḥanafī–Māturīdī tradition, transmitted through an unbroken chain stretching back to Imām al-Māturīdī, Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, and ultimately the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
