Dr Yusof Mutahar

Dr Yusof Mutahar is an Australian medical doctor, published author, and theologian whose multidisciplinary career spans clinical medicine, education, international health advocacy, and classical Islamic scholarship.

Dr. Yusof Mutahar completed his secondary education at Hale School in 2007, achieving academic results that placed him in the top 1% of students in Australia. He earned his medical degree from the University of Western Australia in 2013 and completed specialist training in 2017 at the age of 27. Dr Mutahar has worked extensively in clinical practice and medical education, mentoring junior doctors and authoring several medical texts designed to support early-career clinicians. He has also contributed to international health policy and reform initiatives, advocating for improved healthcare access and outcomes for disadvantaged communities around the world.

Alongside his medical career, Dr Mutahar pursued advanced studies in the Islamic sciences, specialising in Qur’anic Exegesis (Tafsīr), Ḥanafī Jurisprudence, Māturīdī Theology, Qur’anic Memorisation, Classical Arabic, Islamic History, and Spirituality (Taṣawwuf).

Dr Mutahar is the author of numerous Islamic works. His most significant ongoing contribution is the English translation and commentary of Tafsīr al-Māturīdī (Ta’wīlāt Ahl al-Sunnah), the foundational 30-volume Qur’anic exegesis of Imām Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī (d. 333 AH). This project represents one of the first comprehensive efforts to present this classical theological masterpiece to English-speaking readers while preserving its methodological depth and intellectual rigor.

He holds an authentic ijāzah in the Ḥanafī–Māturīdī tradition, transmitted through an unbroken scholarly chain (silsilah) reaching back to Imām al-Māturīdī, then to Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, and ultimately to the Prophet Muḥammad . This ijāzah authorises him to teach and transmit within this classical Sunni lineage and firmly anchors his work in the continuity of orthodox scholarship. He is also recognised as a descendant of the first Caliph, Abū Bakr as-Ṣiddīq (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu).

Outside his academic and professional pursuits, Dr Mutahar is a dedicated martial artist, holding a black belt in judo and having competed at both national and international levels.
